She’s the true blue Miss Sunshine. Be it father Shakti Kapoor’s sting operation or being dropped by a big banner …nothing can mar Shraddha Kapoor’s mojo. Filmfare bets on tomorrow’s girl.

The daughter of the well-known Shivangi and Shakti Kapoor, Shraddha was inevitably introduced to the film industry at an early age. “My dad would come home with make-up on, his attire would be weird, his hair peculiar and I’d ask, ‘Why are you dressed like this, papa?’ I had no clue what movies were all about. To the extent she even thought he had supernatural powers!

Bubbling with life, she’ll ping you on your Blackberry and before you reply, she’s off to sleep. Her first words to me are always, “What’s the gossip Nandu?” That’s Shraddha, carefree and breezy. Her first film Teen Patti failed to make its mark at the box office. And her second outing, Luv Ka The End, also didn’t exactly create magic.

Shraddha always knew she wanted to face the camera. Her growing up years were envoloped in a bubble of compliments about her good looks and suggestions that she seek stardom. Teen Patti happened when producer Ambika Hinduja spotted her on her Brother Siddhanth Kapoor’s Facebook account.

“Before Teen Patti released, I auditioned for a really important film. I worked day and night and gave the audition my all. But I didn’t bag the part.” The film was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s My Friend Pinto opposite Prateik. After Teen Patti released and tanked, Kalki replaced her in the film. In the process, she was offered a lot of trashy films. Plus, she got a lot of offers from the South for whopping amounts of money but refused because she wanted to concentrate on Hindi cinema.

But since she was a pretty face, she sure didn’t go unnoticed. One of India’s most prolific production houses, Yash Raj Films, called her for an audition. She knew she had her second lease of life. They gave her five scenes and two songs to prepare. I gave it my best shot and in a week even bagged the film!”

Director Bumpy’s Luv Ka The End seems to be a hit with the school and college going audience. It dealt with issues of an 18-year-old girl who decides to get back at her boyfriend for taking advantage of her. While the critics have panned the film for its lack of content, also calling it homophobic.

Our conversation veers into more serious territory. I’m very curious to know how it was growing up with father Shakti Kapoor who played the rogue everyone loved to hate. Didn’t she get into fights in school defending him? She smiles, “Well, I never found myself defending him but a lot of my friends were wary of meeting him. She avoids commenting on the ‘cringe factor’ some of her dad’s films were known for. She says, “I haven’t seen many of my dad’s films that had the cringe factor. I haven’t seen Naughty @ 40.

How did she feel about the sting operation on her father in 2005 where he named some industry personalities being involved in the casting couch syndrome? “You know those headlines, the sting operation and the whole scandal… I couldn’t take it the way they were talking about my dad. I just couldn’t watch it. But mom was actually the most pivotal, the strongest person at that point. I think my dad was made a scapegoat. While the entire family was affected, they recovered quickly thanks to mother Shivani’s strength, says Shraddha.

Her elder brother Siddhanth Kapoor is also set to make his entry into showbiz. Not so long ago the young lad found himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. The police raided a club he was partying at with his friends. Reportedly, drugs were found and being a star son the media spotlight was on him. While he was eventually given a clean chit, it was again a testing time for the family. Shraddha remembers, “A whole bunch of people were caught, weren’t they?

All this has only made the newest pin-up girl positive that the going is only going to get better. So is she single? “Maybe,” she answers. I ask her about her ‘close friendship’ with a certain Vanraj Zaveri and she quips, “Maybe. You’re getting none of this information out of me. It’s my personal life.” Single or not Shraddha has style and spunk like none other.

Shraddha Kapoor reveals how she was asked to make the trademark Shakti Kapoor 'aaoon' sound and dance with naada hanging out of her shorts.

Shakti Kapoor's daughter Shraddha Kapoor's debut film Teen Patti might have gone unnoticed but the actress makes a refreshing comeback this year and is here to stay. "To be honest, I was extremely bummed out with the failure of Teen Patti ", admits Shraddha. "People didn't like the film and they are entirely entitled to their opinion. But such is life!"

"Since my first film didn't work, people were wary of casting me. Also I didn't have a fleshed out role in Teen Patti wherein people could judge me on the scale of my performance", confesses Shraddha who had hard time post Teen Patti . "Then I auditioned for this role in Y-Films and Luv Ka The End happened. It is a huge opportunity for me". Shraddha has now signed a 3-film deal with Y-Films though it's a non-exclusive agreement, meaning she can do films outside the banner as well.

Luv Ka The End , the first film coming from Y-Films, the new division of Yash Raj Films, claims to be an anti romantic-comedy film. That sounds unusual coming from the Yash Raj stable who are known for their sugar-coated love stories. Shraddha clarifies, "To begin with Luv Ka The End has lots of romance but as it progresses it has a violent twist after which it becomes an anti rom-com. I play the character of Riya Dayal who is feminine, quirky but at the same time determined. When she learns that her boyfriend is cheating on her, initially she is heartbroken and shattered. But she gets over the rona-dhona and picks up the baseball bat to get even with him".

So does her character have shades of Kill Bill ? "Well I never thought of it that way but now that you mention, I can actually see some common shades of violence and revenge between the two films", laughs the pretty Kapoor girl.

Talking about her costar Taaha Shah, Shraddha says, "I enjoyed getting even with him. This being his first film, he used to bombard me with questions from shot-takings to acting to anything and everything. He was like this curious cat who had no idea about things and I was an information bank to him".

But at the same time she learnt a lot from Taasha. "It was the climax sequence where I had trouble with this long monologue. Our film was made in a very short span of time and we didn't get enough time for rehearsals to perfect our acts. At that time Taasha helped me a lot with my lines and guided me through the entire sequence".

Any tips that came handy from father Shakti Kapoor since she is playing a role with grey shades? "Mine is not a negative character", she is quick to defend. "The only thing that my father taught me was to be honest with my performance. But more than my father it was director Bumpy who wanted me to be real wicked while swinging the baseball bat. He always complained that I was holding the bat in a girly way".

On a funny note Shradha adds that through the filming, she was asked to make the trademark Shakti Kapoor 'aaoon' sound a hundred times and dance with naada hanging out of her shorts. "But jokes apart I do not want my father to watch the film. Actually I haven't watched the film myself. Once I see the final film and am happy with it would I want my parents to watch it", says Shraddha.
Is she confident enough to cut through the competition in Bollywood? "I have heard good things about the industry and I have heard bad things. But, I believe, in times when we have banners like Y-Films that are supporting new talents, there are opportunities galore for youth and the industry can accommodate everyone. So no worries!", signs off Shraddha on a positive note.

'Deep down, I knew I wanted to act'

Being a star child, was your childhood different compared to your friends?
I was known to be a villain/comedian's daughter in school. My friends knew my father's films and had watched them. I was never allowed to travel by rickshaw, even under supervision, till a long, long time. It was only after throwing big tantrums and bullying my parents that I got to go for a few rides. When I was little, I wanted my own PINK rickshaw (Oh God!)
Till the 7th Standard, I wasn't allowed to go for a single school trip. My first trip was to Matheran and I was very excited to have been granted permission after six years of pleading! But I visited my father's sets and travelled with him around the world. This used to be the most fun experience with my family.

When did you decide to be an actress?
Somewhere deep down, I always knew it. I fully realised it in high school when I decided to take up theatre studies. I played the role of "Sandy" in the 10th Standard in Grease; sang and acted on stage and couldn't get over the thrill it gave me even after the show was over. I felt so happy. I wanted to feel that again!

Where did you study acting?
I studied high school in Boston where acting was incorporated in my syllabus. Later, I learned diction and acting under Mohit Tugnait at home. For Teen Patti, we had workshops with Royston Abel and Barry John and of course, the numerous script readings and group meetings with our director Leena Yadav.

If not an actor, what would you want to be?
I would love to sing for my films and do a musical, but I can't see myself doing anything else right now other than acting!

Share one interesting moment on the set of Teen Patti.
The first time I went on a BEST bus was on the first day of the shoot. I was always curious to take a bus ride.

You are the new Kapoor in the Bollywood. How does it feel?
Ooo… Kapoor's is a nice surname to have, isn't it? I like being a Kapoor, though I am half Maharashtrian. The league of the Kapoors sounds mighty nice.

Where do you see yourself in ten years from now?
Looking back at 10 years of a great journey in this industry, smiling to myself and saying, come on 11th year! Or maybe I'll be whisked off my feet by the most handsome man, I will be madly in love... maaaybe.

When does Shraddha Kapoor grace the big screen again?
I can't say right now! Am supposed to learn to be secretive, so don't ask .

In B-town where daughters are known to get a raw deal these doting dads have made their daughters dreams their own.

B-town has had its share of star daughters. The mothers have always been very supportive and passed on some valuable survival tips to their daughters. Interestingly what's different now is that the doting dads— all of whom have acted in films and have seen the difficulties women face in the male dominated film industry— are going all out to support their betis.

As far as daddy issues go, Shakti Kapoor takes the cake. His daughter Shraddha, a young and beautiful girl, made her debut in Leena Yadav's Teen Patti earlier this year. Question him about the role reversal among dads and he quips, “I told my daughter that I'm happy for her as Bollywood is the safest place for her to make a debut. She comes from a family of film stars. Her maasi (mother's sister) Padmini Kolhapure was an actress too. Bollywood is like a second home to her.” He adds, “Once kids grow up they do just what they want. I thought it would be best to support my daughter. In case, she ever goes through a rough phase, I will definitely know about it and be by her side.”

Fathers fear that not supporting their daughters could be a disadvantage. They also are afraid that rather than concentrating on doing good work, their little princesses might try in vain to impress their dads. But having their father’s undying support indirectly keeps trouble at bay.
“Shraddha has everything on a platter; money and support. She doesn't need to do films just for the money. It makes her feel emotionally stronger. It lets her concentrate on her acting and work harder. Give her a couple of years and she will be a fine actress,” says a visibly-proud Shakti.

Like all actresses Shraddha too has to bear the brunt of alleged link-ups with her co-stars. But doting dad Shakti didn’t hesitate to spring to her defence. Another benefit of having a celebrity dad: rumours are never taken seriously. “I have told my daughter that nobody can force her into anything,” he adds. Is that because she happens to be his daughter? “Not really. The profession is very open. Whatever one does is highlighted in the news the next day,” he says.

Shraddha Kapoor's 'Click'

Shraddha Kapoor, who played the student-musician in Teen Patti, is also an avid photographer.

The next best thing which happened to the tall and lissome Shraddha Kapoor besides her debut film Teen Patti was buying her first professional camera, a Canon 500D.

“Photography has intrigued me since I was a child. I would always grab the camera from my parents to click photographs around the house, or when we were travelling. My parents always encouraged me to take pictures and are very proud of the pictures I have clicked,” gushes the young actress.

Last year Shraddha, who till then had been clicking on a digital camera, decided to pursue her hobby more seriously and bought her first professional camera. Ever since, she has been carrying it around with her, especially while travelling. “A professional camera comes with a lot more features like light adjustments and better image quality. Recently I carried it with me to Sewri, Mumbai, where I took some amazing pictures of flamingoes. I am very proud of the photographs. The other favourites are of the landscape shots of Ladakh and of a public garden in New York city,” she says.

Though Shraddha is passionate about this hobby, she emphasises that she has no plans of turning a professional photographer or cinematographer. “Acting has and will always be my first love. I am waiting for the announcements about my forthcoming projects that will be made soon. But the camera will always be my best friend,” she says excitedly.

‘Is about life and beyond’ says perky rising actress Shraddha Kapoor talking about her current read - The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.

I am a lover of books and believe in the fact that sometimes the book draws you towards it. And that’s what happened during a holiday with my friends in Nagpur. I was drawn to — The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma.

The most impressive aspect about this fable is that it’s non-preachy. I recommend this title to everyone. I’ve been a voracious reader since I was 14. My school encouraged reading habits in students and thanks to that practice, today, I find great companionship in books. I enjoy reading to the extent that I create vivid visuals in my mind and with Memoirs of a Geisha, I did just that. Yet, my all-time favourites remain JD Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Gregory David Robert’s Shantaram. I so want to meet Gregory Robert someday, considering he visits Mumbai often.

Turn the camera on 21-year-old Shraddha Kapoor, the eye-catching daughter of Shakti Kapoor. After making debut in "Teen Patti" with Amitabh Bachchan, she’s already reaching out for bigger celluloid dreams. “I am getting offers from big production houses but I am not on a signing spree,” she says.

Can any star kid not be bitten by the Bollywood bug? We’ve seen many generations of Kapoors and two Bachchans amongst others. Most recently Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor kick-started their careers with to-die-for debuts.

But, even for these kids who know their way around the industry, it’s a tough world out there. So how do you survive when there are other actors vying for a share of fame, glory and the big bucks? Says Shraddha: “To keep up the hype and the tempo even in your second film is also very important. The fact that one is a star kid will not help in today’s industry if you are zero in your acting capabilities.” (Shraddha has multiple links in the industry: actress Padmini Kolhapure is her aunt and her mother Shivangi is Lata Mangeshkar’s niece).

Of course, these children start with plenty of advantages. For one, they know and understand how the industry works. Says Leena Yadav, director of Teen Patti: “Unlike rank newcomers, these kids instinctively know about films because they have grown up in film families. That makes a director’s job somewhat simpler. Also today’s star kids have a sense of integrity and are willing to slog for hours to give that perfect shot.”

There’s obviously plenty of support from home too. Says Shraddha: “I discuss all my projects with my parents. My father is extremely patient and understanding and advises me to be honest and grounded in order to achieve success.”

For some, the offers are coming in thick and fast. Shraddha says, “Even before my movie Teen Patti released I was flooded with offers. At present, I am still reading scripts and in no hurry to prove myself.” And if all goes well, Shraddha will be doing Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next film.

Shraddha is a trained Odissi and Kathak dancer and honed her acting skills under acting guru Barry John in Mumbai.

Now, public are waiting for the next projects from this young and beautiful girl!

An Interview with Shraddha

Shraddha Kapoor tells that she bagged her debut role in Teen Patti on her own merit and not because she happens to be the daughter of Shakti Kapoor or the niece of Padmini Kolhapure.

What is your role in Teen Patti?

I play the role of Aparna Khanna who is a studious girl and is also a guitarist in her college’s music band. Aparna is a very intriguing person. The film is all about Aparna’s journey and how during the journey Aparna starts discovering things about her which surprise her.

Do you think Teen Patti is the right launching pad for a newcomer like you?

Teen Patti, let me reiterate is not a quintessential Indian cinema about boy meets girl. Nor is it about gambling. Gambling forms just the backdrop of the film Teen Patti. It is something which Indian cinema has not seen before. I thought that the script was very gripping and my role was well etched. I really felt that the film was good enough to be my launching pad.

To what extent could you relate to the character of Aparna in the film?

With my glasses on, I look like Aparna at home. I could relate to the role of Aparna to some extent since we look almost similar. The curiosity which both Aparna has and I have is another similarity between both of us.

Did you learn acting to equip yourself for the part that you are playing in Teen Patti?

I did not learn acting from any acting Institute. I learnt acting from my dad and Padmini mausi. As far as preparing for my part for the film Teen Patti was concerned, Mohit Tugnait taught me the nuances required for the role of Aparna.

How was the experience of working with an actor like Amitabh Bachchan?

I was extremely excited and also very nervous at the same time because I had got the opportunity to work with a legendary actor like Amitabh Bachchan in my very first film. The stature of the film was set automatically because of the presence of Amitabh Bachchan.

Did the fact that you are Shakti Kapoor’s daughter help you bag your first break easily?

Just because I happen to the daughter of Shakti Kapoor and the niece of Padmini Kolhapure, the role did not just land on my lap on a silver platter. I got my break on my own merit. Not many are aware of the fact that I had actually gone to audition for the role. It helped me that Ambika Hinduja who is the producer of Teen Patti had seen my picture on Face Book.

However, I would admit that the biggest advantage that I have is that people know me better even before I have made my debut as an actress because the media is more interested in me because I am the daughter of a celebrity like Shakti Kapoor. I also confess that I have more connections in the film industry because of dad and hence people know that I exist.

And what according to you is the flip side of the coin?

The flip side is that people will compare me with my dad and my mausi. All that I’d say is that even if I have 2 percent of the talent that they have, I’ll be happy.

How intimidating was it to share the frame with Amitabh Bachchan?

It was simply a great learning experience to work with an actor of the stature of Amitabh Bachchan. Amitji knew that he would unknowingly make us feel intimidated and hence he made it a point not to spare us and left no opportunity to pull our legs and make us shed our inhibitions and feel comfortable and at ease while working with him. In fact, I’d be worried if I was not asked to give a retake or Amitji did not give me any suggestion to improve myself.

What did you find interesting about Mr. Bachchan, as an actor?

It was interesting to note that Amitji used to cut himself off and be aloof whenever he had to do a serious scene. Amitji made me realize to what extent you have to go as an actor to go inside yourself to perform the character that you are playing.

What about your experience of working with R. Madhavan?

Working with an actor like R. Madhavan, who we used to call Maddy fondly was great fun. Maddy taught me a lot of card tricks while we were shooting on the sets for the film.

What kind of roles do you like to take up as an actress?

As an actress, I’d like to do a wide range of roles and be a part and parcel of what is known as versatile cinema.

Which films of your mausi do you like the best?

Prem Rog is my most favorite film among all the films in which my aunt Padmini Kolhapure has acted.

Who are your favorite directors?

Among the directors who I’d like to work with are Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap and Karan Johar, to name a few.

Who are your favorite actors and actresses today?

My most favorite actor among the stars of today is undoubtedly Ranbir Kapoor who has shown a lot of caliber even though he is only four films old till date. Among the actresses of today, I like Priyanka Chopra as well as Vidya Balan who are performers of the first order.

A Lovely Daughter

Shraddha Kapoor, who is making her debut with Leena Yadav’s Teen Patti, calls her dad Shakti Kapoor ‘Baaps’ as she offers him coffee. Both get comfortable for a joint interview in the conference room of the production office of the film.

Dressed in denims and a tee, Shraddha starts off with her childhood dream, “Since childhood, I have seen my father and my aunt Padmini Kolhapure at shoots. I had a natural inclination to follow in their footsteps.”

Doting dad Shakti, looking at his daughter with pride, says, “She is pretty and talented and nothing can stop her. She is very bindaas, and very few people make me laugh like she can.”

Her training started in school where she learnt Kathak and started doing theatre in 9th grade. She says, “That gave me a taste of the stage. Before Teen Patti, I trained with Mr Mohit Tugnait, who taught me acting and diction. For Teen Patti, we did many workshops with Barry John and Ashley Lobo.”

Did Shakti warn her about the wolves in the industry? He says, “I always believe that if you are strong, nothing in this world can hurt you. Wolves are everywhere, but in show business, we are more exposed to them.”

At this juncture, Shraddha quips, “I think there are bad people everywhere and I can also turn into a wolf!”
Shraddha had read several scripts before Teen Patti but no role offered her such scope and range. And, of course, Shakti thinks his daughter is lucky to debut in a film that features Amitabh Bachchan.

He says, “The audience will go to the theatres for Mr Bachchan and will recognise the young talent. In the movie, she plays a college girl, a pick-up, a socialite, a tapori, chaalu ladki eating paan, while all the monsters are ogling at her. She might not have the songs or the romantic angle, but she portrays a wide range of emotions.”

Shraddha gently chides him as she tells him not to give away too much information about the film. Shraddha is open to the idea of bold scenes, and Shakti is supportive of her stance. He only says, “She is an adult and knows what is right or wrong.

All I tell her is that we come from a respected family and that she should know her boundaries.” It’s actually her mother who gives Shraddha advice as she makes frequent visits to the sets. Shakti has the final word as he says, “Good people make good actors.” And, we presume, he’s referring to his daughter.

She’s extremely confident, ‘ambitious’ in her own words and believes in her capabilities, and when it comes to Bollywood — she’s no babe in the woods. Because this gal hails from a khandaan that boasts of father Shakti Kapoor, aunt Padmini Kolhapure and grandfather Pandit Pandharinath Kolhapure. Presenting the latest Kapoor — Shraddha Kapoor!

“I grew up in an atmosphere where I saw my father leaving early for work, having odd hours and then to see the difference between him on-screen and the way he was off-screen. I found the whole process of becoming someone else fascinating!” she smiles.

Considering her lineage, it’s but natural to expect offers on a platter. But Shraddha didn’t take her entry into filmdom for granted. The newcomer, who makes her debut in Serendipity Films’ Teen Patti coming Friday, believes her journey towards acting started the day she was born 21 years ago. Shraddha’s done theatre for four years, learnt acting from Mohit Tugnait and later from Barry John, was part of a dance troupe at Boston University and knows how to play the guitar after six months of learning it for the film (“I play the lead guitarist of a band,” she informs us). Of course, she’s lucky to have an acting guru at home itself. “He is so humorous that I got to learn a lot just by observing him,” she adds about dad and filmi bad guy Shakti.

It’s a given that any newcomer working in a film with none other than Big B would be asked how the experience with such an accomplished actor was. But we threw her a different one — was it more difficult working with one of the biggest superstars of the millennium or to act with her father? “The day I was acting with my father was by far the most challenging for me!” she admits, “I think I must have made the maximum mistakes that day. My dad kept yelling at me ‘I’m not your father here, I’m an actor’!” she laughs at the memory.

Her father’s name might help her to an extent but after that, it’s her talent that would have to speak and Shraddha’s aware of that. “I am ambitious. I like to think and dream about the future,” she says. Considering the competition that lies ahead, would she be able to pitch in her best? Would she, for example, wear a bikini if the role requires it? “Nobody’s made that proposition yet, so I’ll consider that when it happens,” she says. Okay, but does she consider herself sexy? “Sexy?” she asks with a laugh, “We’ll let the audience decide that. Sexy’s not the way I would define myself. Moderately reserved, a little shy and very curious. But sexy? Nah!”

A Step to Filmdom

Shraddha Kapoor, the pretty young actress who stars in Serendipity Films’ mathematical thriller, Teen Patti, has her net addiction to thank for landing her first role.

“Ambika (Hinduja, the film’s producer) and my brother Siddhanth are school friends. She saw my pictures in his friends list on Facebook, and thought, ‘Who’s this girl?’ She asked my bro if I’d be interested in her movie, and he answered, ‘Why not? Shraddha has always wanted to act,’” she narrates. Shraddha was then called for an audition, amongst many. “Pata nahin kitne hazaaron logon mein ek main bhi thi jisne audition diya!” she says.
First movie, first one to be short listed through a social networking site, and also sharing screen space with dad for the first time – too many firsts at the age of 19? But the teen doesn’t think she’s stepped too early into showbiz. “I always wanted to be an actor. I was even offered films when I was 15,” she says. But she did not accept any, for at that time, studies were a priority. “But now that I have finally begun, each day is a new experience,” says the teenager.

Growing up with a father who’s most popular as a villain did not bother Shraddha. Instead, she enjoyed watching her dad doing serious, negative, as well as comic roles. “It was such a pleasure watching him. He’s so versatile.” But when Shraddha had to be with him on the sets, she was a bundle of nerves. “I was extremely nervous that day. I’d always known him as a father, never as a co-actor. But it was fun too.” Now that she’s a part of Bollywood, any golden instructions from dad? She reveals, “He has never told me ‘Yeh mat karo, woh mat karo.’ Rather, he’s always said, ‘Jo mann mein aaye, woh karo. And enjoy the whole process.’” And she says that this also means that there would be no hassles locking lips or wearing skimpy attire on screen. “He has never taken decisions on my behalf. He knows that I will focus on the beauty of the role, and do whatever suits the script,” she insists.

Ask her if she thought life is a bed of roses for a star kid, and she has a clear take. “The only advantage of being a star kid is that you know a lot of people already. Newcomers don’t have any contacts, which is why they have a tough time. But beyond contacts, it is your own calibre that can draw the audience to a movie – my dad cannot help my movies be a success,” she states. Shraddha reiterates the fact that she gave an audition for her debut, just like the rest of the three debutantes in the film. “So I don’t see any great advantage.”

She’s got a similar take on having a famous surname. “I just hope I get successful, whether my surname is Kapoor, Sharma, Dutta, or anything!” she jokes. And who’d she like to work with in the future? “Ranbir Kapoor and Aamir Khan,” comes the reply.

Shraddha Kapoor is a bundle of excitement as the release of her hatke debut film, Teen Patti, draws to a close.

“I feel I was born to be in the entertainment line. There was a time I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do and lived life like any other teenager. When I was chosen for the film, I was thrilled because I was very sure about wanting to do Teen Patti. I remember telling my Dad (Shakti Kapoor) that. It was great to have found an aim and a routine, to have found something to work for. Teen Patti has been an amazing journey and I can’t wait to get back on a film set and act. I want to be here for a long time and also get into direction and other aspects of film-making,” she says confidently.

“My ultimate dream is to do a film in which I am acting, singing and dancing because I love doing all that. Farhan Akhtar has done all that in one film so he is quite an inspiration. I want to tell people that besides acting, I can sing and dance too as I am a very creatively-inclined person. I don’t know how to do that because I am quite bad at PR!” says Miss Kapoor.

Talking about music and dancing, Shraddha says, “I love dancing to anything with beats. I haven’t clubbed in ages but I used to go to Prive. I am very selective about what I listen to and it depends on my mood. I like old Hindi songs, selective R&B, progressive house and electronica. I think the music of Teen Patti is quite versatile and the title track is my favourite.”

Were you influenced by your father?

Definitely. My love for films developed naturally. I’d see dad going to work.

Did you train in acting?

After college I took lessons with Mohit Sugnayak. For Teen Patti, I trained with Royston Abel, Ashley Lobo and Barry John and had script readings with Leena Yadav, the director.

How was it meeting Amitabh Bachchan?

I first met him as a little girl at his Holi party. It was only on the first day of the shoot that I properly met him. I was nervous. But he came across as humble and approachable.

How was it acting with the Big B?

I remember this one scene, he was so kind he asked me, “Shraddha, would you like to do this scene from the top so that you get into the mood?” I thought that was thoughtful.

Tell us about your role?

It’s a shy studious girl’s journey from a young girl to a woman.

How is it to be part of this mega industry?

It’s a tiny step. It feels great that something I wanted to do is really happening. I’m looking forward to my stay here.

How do you view the competition today?

The industry is evolving and conventions are being broken, especially in this film where three boys and a girl are being launched. Personally, I am a big fan of good cinema.

How did your parents react to your debut?

Dad was more excited than me. Mum was happy too. Today when they see the promos they’re very excited.

How was it growing up with a film villain for a father?

The kids would ask me if he was strict. And when they came home, they’d see how funny he is and couldn’t believe it.

For someone to break into Bollywood, you need to be ready to make incessant trips to production houses and meet directors. Or if you are lucky you get spotted at a party or at some filmi do.

But if you are Shraddha Kapoor the producer and director find you through a social networking site!

Shraddha, the daughter of Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kolhapure, was spotted by Leena Yadav as she looked for actors to cast in her soon to be released film Teen Patti.

“Actually something happened before the Facebook incident. The assistant casting director actually saw her somewhere and he suggested her name. And we were like ‘okay…Shakti Kapoor has a daughter who is ready to act. Okay we need to find her’. So before we got in touch formally we just gave it a shot,” says Leena with a laugh, “Because everybody is on Facebook these days!”

“I think Ambika (Hinduja) knows Shraddha’s brother so with that we got entry into Facebook and we checked her out there. And we said ‘there is something there.’ So we got her into the office and that’s where Shraddha’s story began,” explains Yadav.

With the film a fortnight away from release, Yadav is anxious but she says that has nothing to do with the fact that she has four debutants in her film.

“You know I auditioned for these roles for almost a year. It took me a year to find these final four that I settled on. After that we had some real intense and hard core workshops with the best in the business. And then when I saw them in the same frame as the likes of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and do so splendidly I was so proud of them. It’s not easy being in the position they are in. I completely empathise with them. Through the filming I almost became like a mother to them and now I feel like I am about to give them up for adoption as the film stands for release,” says Leena.

She is pretty, funky, cute, stylish, dreamy and slim. Porcelain-skinned Shraddha Kapoor is the promising and polished newbie on the Bollywood block. The soft-spoken girl shares her hair- and skin-care, style and make-up tips.

1) My style is very Bohemian and comfortable. I love colour, and dress according to my mood. I like fashion, but I don’t follow trends. I love to shop everywhere, whether it is at Colaba Causeway or the high street boutiques in London. Lately, I love shoes from Gucci. I purchased a grey and purple bag from Miu Miu and that has become my favourite.

2) I think a pair of well-fitted jeans, a versatile jacket, a pair of black stilettos, a versatile day-and-night bag, a dress, tank, tee and shirt in white, Converse shoes and flip-flops are wardrobe must-haves.

3) I love colourful make-up. I use eye make-up from MAC, foundation from Bobbi Brown and Chanel and lip and cheek tint from Benetint. Vaseline is a must-have. It is very important to remove every trace of make-up before sleeping.

4) I use a hair-pack made of aloe vera, hibiscus leaves or flowers and curd. You need to mix aloe vera juice or gel with the dried hibiscus leaves and curd and coat your hair with the mixture. Keep it on for twenty minutes and rinse it off with water. The cooling and nourishing pack leaves your hair incredibly soft, smooth and shiny.

5) Everything in our lives is visual, and our eyes are the first senses that get stimulated. To relax and refresh your eyes, close them and place chilled cucumber slices on them. It is an incredibly relaxing eye-spa in itself.

Shraddha's Favorite

Shraddha Kapoor loves reading and is a huge fan of The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. She tells us about her favourite pastime and reveals facets of her personality.

Talking about her personality, she says, “I have my moods, but I am not drastically moody. I am quiet on some days and very hyper and loud on other days. I am not entirely reserved, but if I get along with someone really well, then I show a greater side of myself to them. I have very few close friends, who have been with me since childhood and they know me for what I am. I am approachable, but I have my boundaries.”

Shraddha’s world revolves around fun and enjoying the moment. “I like to have fun in whatever I do. Even when I am getting my hair and make-up done, that moment should be fun and enjoyable for me and everyone else. I like to be in the present moment. It’s good to interact with people and understand their point of view. You can learn from people who are younger and older than you. This should be an everyday process. More than anything, I like to enjoy moments,” she smiles.

The soft-spoken debutante loves reading all sorts of books and is a huge fan of classics. “I can thrive on a good book!,” she declares. “I am currently reading Dracula by Bram Stoker. It’s a classic, and I think it is really well-written for its time (1897). Shantaram used to be my favourite book, but now, The Catcher in The Rye by J.D. Salinger has taken its place!,” she says with a sparkle in her hazel eyes.

She is no stranger to the Law of Attraction, either. “I love The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, and it is one my favourite books in the world. I have also signed up with Totally Unique Thoughts and I love the positive messages they send every day. I try practicing the Law, and it usually works for me. When it works, it is mind-blowing and awesome!,” exclaims Ms Kapoor.

Being Shakti Kapoor's daughter and Padmini Kholapure's niece, it's only a matter of time before Shraddha Kapoor followed in their footsteps.

Her debut is Leena Yadav's Teen Patti, a film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sir Ben Kingsley and R Madhavan. Shraddha spills the beans about the whole experience.

You must have been over the moon when you found that you would be sharing screen space with Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley...

Oh my God! I couldn't believe it! I still haven't absorbed it all. I was on top of the world and so was my family. I was also a nervous wreck. I kept thinking, "What if I goof this up? What will they think of me?" But after working with them, my fears subsided. They were very giving and I learnt so much from them. They were so open and had absolutely no airs about themselves.

I will always be grateful to Ambika [Hinduja, producer] and Leena for giving me the role.

Your father must be proud. How was it growing up as his daughter?

He is a very fun loving father and a very funny man at home too. He always makes us laugh. That doesn't mean he isn't strict when the situation demands it. But he would make me understand things about life using humour as a medium.

Did you wanted to do things but couldn't or wasn't allowed to because of your background?

There were certain things that were different. My father wouldn't let me travel by rickshaws, though I wanted to.

Did you visit him on the sets when he was working?

I used to. When I was big enough, he would let me watch fight sequences. He would always explain to me that what he did on screen was different from what he did in real life.

Did watching your father in action inspire you to take up acting?

I have grown up watching my father and aunt's films. They seemed to be enjoying their lives. So yes, they enticed me into the profession. Going on the sets cemented my decision.

So how did 'Teen Patti' happened?

It's a very interesting story. Ambika saw my picture on Facebook. She knew my brother from school and so she put two and two together and asked him if I was interested in films. He knew I was and said as much. I met her, read the script and auditioned for the role. Now here I am playing Aparna Khanna.

Did you consult your father and your aunt?

Absolutely. My father loved the script and my role in it but left it to me to decide. My aunt too was very happy for me. She was extremely supportive.

How was the first day of shoot?

There was a lot of work to be done before the day of shoot. We went through a lot of training under Barry John [theatre guru]. We had a lot of script readings with Leena and the rest of the cast. We prepared for about three months.

The first day of shoot was on my birthday. We were shooting the promo song. It was like the perfect birthday gift. All of us were really nervous facing the camera.

Did your father accompany you on the sets?

My parents, brother, two aunts, cousins and grandfather were there on the first day as it was my birthday. My father became emotional on seeing me perform. I only hope I've made him proud.

How did it feel to be directed by a female director?

This is my first film so I can't compare. Being female didn't make her any less competent. In fact, she has delivered beyond our expectations. She is a very fun loving person and always has a smile on her face. She is very ambitious too. I noticed that she lives in the moment.

You're not the only newbie in the movie. How were the others?

They were amazing. I got to learn a lot from them. They all come from different fields. Dhruv Ganesh has a theatre background, Vaibhav Talwar is a model and Siddharth Kher has done many ads. They have so much passion and drive that they influenced me too.

We had our own little group and were called the 'kids on sets'. There was a lot of give and take. We became very good friends.

What kinds of roles interest you?

I want to play different roles -- as many as I can.

Your father excels in comic roles. Do you have a funny bone as well?

I wouldn't know unless I'm given a role like that.

There were reports that you did a Kannada film before Teen Patti...

No. I haven't done any south Indian film. This is my first stint in films. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't act in south Indian films, regional films or world cinema.

What next? There are rumours of you signing a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

It's only 'Teen Patti' for now.

“Ambika (Hinduja, the producer) was looking for a girl to play Aparna. She saw my photos on Facebook and contacted my brother Siddharth, who she knew from school. I had to audition several times before I was selected, and I was grilled by the director, producer and casting director. I remember telling my father (Shakti Kapoor) that I was absolutely sure about doing this movie. I was thrilled that I had bagged it.”

Born to Entertain

“I have always wanted to get into the entertainment industry, since a very young age. Singing, dancing and acting is what I want to do. I have done theatre while growing up. I would also like to direct in the future. I am creatively inclined; be it art, writing, gardening or even Poi (a kind of juggling). I have grown up eating, reading and drinking films because of my father and aunt, so it all comes naturally to me.”

A dark stage suddenly came to life as Amitabh Bachchan’s baritone narrated a few lines from his forthcoming film Teen Patti. Lights on, and the cast of the film comprising R. Madhavan and newcomers Shraddha Kapoor, Vaibhav Talwar, Dhruv Ganesh and Sidharth performed jazz to the strains of a snazzy cabaret number "Teri Neeyat Kharaab". It was a symbolic act from the film in which Amitabh plays the protagonist. Here, Volga, a dancer from abroad, attempts to lure and seduce him. Though he matches her moves step-by-step, he remains unaffected by her wiles. Hence he is dressed in white, which symbolises purity. His co-stars, who give into temptation, are attired in black!

Shraddha Kapoor is all set to make her Bollywood debut with Leena Yadav’s Teen Patti.

Launch Vehicle
I play the character of Aparna Khanna, a studious, reserved girl with a lot of determination. Her heart belongs to her best friend Sid but he doesn’t see her in the same light. Hence, she becomes a part of the Teen Patti gang, following her heart, ready to show herself in a new light to him. During the course of the game, she realises the power of greed and how it can make a person do bad things.

First Audition
Ambika Hinduja, our producer, saw a picture of me on Facebook and got in touch with my brother, who happens to be her school friend. I was given the opportunity to read the script and decide if I was open for an audition. I still remember how thrilled I was and could feel my dream moulding into reality when I finally knew I was doing the film.

Stepping-Stone
I come from a film background. My father and aunts are actors
while my grand father’s cousin is Lata Mangeshkar. Growing up in such an environment, I developed a natural interest for the arts. When I was in school I used to be actively involved in our annual days and from the ninth grade onwards I was actively involved in theater and the fine arts. While preparing for Teen Patti, we (newcomers) trained with Royston Abel and Barry John for over four months along with numerous script readings and interactions with our director Leena Yadav and the rest of the cast. This surely made our focal point more narrow and it laid a solid groundwork before we started shooting.

First Shot
I remember the first day of shooting. It was on my birthday and we shot for the promo song. I was awestruck and overwhelmed by our surroundings, the hussle and bustle of the crew at work and of course, the entrance of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan himself. The first shot was of the six of us (prime cast) walking towards the camera and I will always cherish the fact that I was matching my steps with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Careful to put us all at ease, he instantly connected with all of us with his most humorous and jovial attitude. We shot for that scene at the Yash Raj
Studios.

Stumbling Block
I would say blocks. Every moment while preparing and shooting for the film, I stumbled, picked myself up, absorbed, learned countless new things and did my best to incorporate it into my being. I was so intrigued with my character Aparna that I got completely involved with it. Aparna still fascinates me and there is a lot that I have taken from her and has now become a part of me.

Lessons Learnt
The whole experience was a journey of learning. A few that I can point out are patience, which is something I lacked before getting involved with Teen Patti and team work. Being a part of an ensemble cast and also working with numerous other actors and crew members made me feel humble and more empathetic to what others think and feel.

Matinee Idol
I look up to my dad Shakti Kapoor, my aunt Padmini Kolhapure, Amitabh Bachchan, Guru Dutt, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aamir Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to name a few. Each one has a special trait of his/her own that inspires me to strive for excellence. If there was one role I would want to play, it would be the role of Waheeda Rehmanji in Pyaasa. There are so many good actors and directors out there but to name a few I would love to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, Ashutosh Gowariker and Nagesh Kukunoor.

Future Projects
Currently, I am just involved with Teen Patti. I would like to do films that have social messages along with an entertainment value. I want to explore a wide variety of cinema and versatile roles.

The Gorgeous Fan

While most of the debutantes from Teen Patti are going ga-ga over the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with Amitabh Bachchan, Shakti Kapoor’s daughter Shraddha talks about bonding with R Madhavan.

Shraddha talks about bonding with R Madhavan and being in awe of Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley. “Madhavan was a great source of entertainment on the sets. He is really funny. I would miss his company on the days he wasn’t shooting. He has these card tricks. In between shots, he would get an audience around him and do these card tricks confidently, while the shot was being set up. We wanted to learn them. He is a great actor, and he is fantastic company. He just kept the mood up while we were shooting,” she recalls.

About working with Big B, she says, “Hundreds and thousands and millions of people would give their bodies, limbs and souls to work with Amitabh Bachchan. The four of us (Dhruv Ganesh, Vaibhav Talwar, Shraddha Kapoor and Siddharth Kher) had to give grilling auditions to work with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. We have been very lucky to do so in our first film, which is at such high stakes. Interacting with Mr. Bachchan has taught me what humility is because he is so great, yet so humble. I think I must have done something amazing in my past life to get the chance of working with Mr. Bachchan in this life.”

Working with Sir Ben Kinglsey was the cherry on her already fabulous cake. Miss Kapoor tells us excitedly, “We were just getting used to working with Mr. Bachchan and then we found out that Sir Ben Kingsley is on board. It was an Oh-My-God moment, and the four of us knew that we were doing something right. It took everything to another level altogether because he agreed to do Teen Patti. I was and am definitely floating on cloud 9. He is very approachable and very jovial. I am extremely grateful and fortunate to have interacted with him.”

The game starts on February 26, 2010.

Shraddha Kapoor, the beautiful daughter of menacing on screen villain Shakti Kapoor, is all kicked about her debut venture, Teen Patti. She plays a confident Aparna Khanna who helps a group of gamblers spearheaded by Amitabh Bachchan. But what's giving her chills is the realization that she shared screen space with two legends Bachchan and Ben Kingsley in the movie. She still can't believe that she got unanimously selected from the auditions she gave.

"It's a blessing, that's what I will say. We must have done something very good in our life that we got this chance to start our careers with two phenomenal human beings. I still pinch myself sometimes to actually believe that yes, I am in the movie with Mr. Bachchan. So the feeling is heavenly," says an animated Shraddha.

Talking about her role, Shraddha says, "Aparna is a very quiet person. She's inherently determined to get what she wants. In Teen Patti, she's after her heart. She realises in the film that the betrayal she probably will face from her lover is nothing compared to the betrayal she will go through due to the game."

Shraddha Kapoor like other debutantes in the film went through a rigorous acting sessions from Barry Jones. As Sharddha fondly recollects, Leena Yadav, the director of the movie was with them 24/7. So did you learn Teen Patti? "Of course we did. All of us learnt the game. We played the game for three months. The game is difficult. You have to follow your instincts and put up a brave face even if you are losing. I also won a few games which I am sure I did by fluke," chuckles Shraddha.

Leena Yadav’s Teen Patti on gambling brings together actors Ben Kingsley and Amitabh Bachchan

Four years after filmmaker Leena Yadav crashed out with her directorial debut Shabd , she feels she has a more mature vision of what works at the box office. “I have graduated from letters to numbers,” she says teasingly, referring to her latest project Teen Patti , which deals with the high rollers from the gambling world and a practical application of the theory of probability. “Strangely, I have a morbid fear of numbers. I hope this movie doesn’t prove to be a gamble,” she smiles during a promotional meet at Tasty Tangles, an Oriental restaurant in Vasant Kunj.

The hype and anticipation surrounding the film is already palpable due to its celebrity star cast, Amitabh Bachchan and Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley, who Yadav was determined to ‘catch hold of’. The other actors include R Madhavan and four debutants Shraddha Kapoor, Sidharth Kher, Vaibhav Talwar and Dhruv Ganesh.

Since the subject involved mathematical theories and poker games, the research involved consulting many mathematicians from MIT and IIT. “MY plan was to make a film on the youth,” explains Yadav, who co-wrote the story with Shivkumar Subramaniam. “I met composer Vishal Dadlani who narrated a few incidents related to gambling scams in the US I read up further on card scams and decided to adapt the idea to an Indian setting.”

From script to screen, the film took three-years. Shooting locations ranged from Mumbai’s gambling addas to casinos in London. “Unlike Shabd , which took 38 days to film, Teen Patti took time to script. There were 1,000 auditions for some of the roles,” says Yadav, who started her career as an editor with Rajkumar Hirani in ad films and has worked for television serials like Sea Hawks on Doordarshan.

Rumour mills have started working over time accussing Teen Patti of being a rip-off from Robert Luketic’s 2008 Hollywood film 21, about an MIT scandal on blackjack. “I had officially locked my script before 21 released. My plot is completely different, the only similarity between the two films is the study of human greed,” she explains. With a release slated for February 26, Yadav is confident the wheel of fortune will swing her way.

When debutants left Big B embarrassed

Amitabh Bachchan is proud to have worked with four newcomers in the new film Teen Patti, saying even when he did not know his lines, they would be set and ready on the sets. And it was much the same with co-actor Ben Kingsley, whose preparedness left the Indian megastar a trifle embarrassed.

"I am proud to work with these young debutant actors. It's their first film and I am certain that when you will see the film you won't believe that it was their first film. I hope they will have a very bright future," Amitabh told reporters after the first look of Teen Patti at Cinemax Versova.

Amitabh worked with Siddharth Kher, Shraddha Kapoor, Vaibhav Talwar and Dhruv Ganesh in Leena Yadav's film. The movie also stars the legendary Kingsley.

"They were very enthusiastic and determined to do their work well at this age. They were doing very well in their very first film - the way they have prepared their roles, the rehearsals they did for months to get into the character."

"Many a time I would go on to the sets and not know what I was supposed to do or my lines were not ready with me, but they were all set and ready. That was the inspiration. So every night when I went back to the hotel or came back home, I made sure that I also prepared, so that I didn't look like a fool the next morning," the superstar added.

Teen Patti is an emotionally riveting and razor sharp thriller about greed, deception and giant feats of imagination.

"I play the role of mathematics professor who has cracked a theory of probability and my seniors in university are discarding my findings. One day while playing cards on the computer I realise that my theory is applicable to card games. I discuss my theory with my junior professor, played by Madhavan, and he gives me the idea of visiting a casino and trying my theory," Big B said.

"The theory is if I get to know any one person's cards, by theory of probability I would be able to guess the cards of other members playing the game. That way we win a huge amount of money which in return subjects us to some unprecedented circumstances," he said.

On working with Kingsley, Amitabh said: "He is a wonderful human being. I think that's what comes through before you actually encounter him as an actor. He readily agreed to a reading rehearsal, much before we went on the set and when we were working in England he came across to the hotel where I was and we sat in our room just like two ordinary people and to my surprise he knew every alphabet of his dialogues much, much before I had even decided to sort of look at it.

"That was very embarrassing for me because I was just reading my script and he was reciting all his lines. Very, very well prepared, very considerate actor, very considerate to all his colleagues. It was a wonderful experience," he added.

Mumbai: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan today said his upcoming film Teen Patti', which has been produced and directed by women, is an indicator about the growing clout of women in the country as well as in the film industry.

"We are a a country where 50 per cent of the population is women and they are playing pivotal roles in all spheres. Assistant directors of Teen Patti were also women and I was mighty impressed by their efficiency," the Big B told reporters at the unveiling of the first look of Teen Patti directed by Leena Yadav and produced by Ambika Hinduja here.

Bachchan said the film which releases on February 26 was set in a university and he played a Mathematics professor doing a thesis on theory of Probability.

To a question on the coincidence of the number three in '3 Idiots' and Teen Patti, Bachchan remarked, "I only hope that our '3' should also perform well at the Box Office."

Referring to Mathematics, Bachchan said he never liked the subject as a student. "It is tough for most of us. But, this is just a film and I followed by director's instructions," he said.

Speaking about Ben Kingsley, Bachchan said, "I found Sir Ben to be a wonderful human being before encountering him as an actor. We did lot of reading rehearsals before shooting. When we met as ordinary people in our hotel room, he knew his dialogues very well. He is a considerate and well prepared actor and also a gracious man."

When asked why she decided to sign Kingsley, director Leena said she was on the lookout for an actor who plays a Mathematician whom Venkat Subramanium (Amitabh) looks up to.

"We required an actor of strong screen presence and thought that there was no one better than Kingsley," she said.

Leena said directing Teen Patti was a learning experience because she was working with legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley and also newcomers including Shraddha Kapoor, daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor.

She's a celebrity kid, all of 20 and set to make her big screen debut in Leena Yadav's next film, Teen Patti early next year (and no, she's not been paid Rs one crore for the film as has been rumoured!). She has a lot of things going for her and she's terribly excited about her first media interview with CS. Here's introducing the new kid on the block, Shraddha Kapoor, Shakti Kapoor's little girl:

Filmi Fundas
Although I've only worked on one film so far, I feel I have already grown as an artiste. Teen Patti has helped me broaden my vision and has been a great source of learning. Directed by Leena Yadav, it stars Amitji (Bachchan), R Madhavan and three other new guys -- I'm sorry I can't talk more about the project just yet. But I can say that I am not charging Rs 1 crore for the film!

Bollywood Dreams
I want to make a special place for myself, not only in the hearts of the audience, but also in their lives. I want to be remembered by the roles I play. Movies have always been a very important part of my life, ever since I was a little kid. I used to devour my dad and aunt's (Padmini Kolhapure) films. I also love foreign cinema. I watch a mixed bag of films -- my all time favourites would be Pyaasa, The Shawshank Redemption and Central Station, which is a Portuguese film.

Papa "the Great"
I'm not sure if I've inherited a comic streak from my dad. I'll only find that out when I'm playing a role like that. But, I do love to laugh and be a part of a funny moment. I also thrive on comedies. My dad not only rocks as a funnyman, but he is also an awesome father to me. I value his advice since he's such a seasoned actor. But, he always leaves the decision-making to me. One advice that he's given me is to always stay true to my craft and let go of my inhibitions. After observing him I've learnt that there is no substitute for hard work. I can't wait to put these lessons into practice!

Movies Released on February 2010

"TEEN PATTI" should come in February 2010.

A lot of release dates are likely to change. While the makers of Rann have decided to shift the release by one week [it was slated for release on January 22 along with Veer, but is now shifted to January 29], the makers of Teen Patti have also decided to shift the film from January to February. Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley, Teen Patti will hit the screens on February 26.

Interestingly, three more films are slated for release on February 26: Karthik Calling Karthik [Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone], Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? [Ajay Devgan, Konkona Sen Sharma] and Shaapit [Aditya Narayan]. Will these films stick to the already confirmed date or shift ahead, is to be seen.

However, I hope no more "release date" changes ahead. So that, we, the movie goers, can go to the movie theater without doubt to see the movie we've been most awaiting for! Cheers! :)

New Girl in the Tinseltown

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call this the perfect start. Shraddha Kapoor, the 20-year-old daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor will make her debut with Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley in Teen Patti that releases in February. The only female actor in the cast, Shraddha, who met producer Ambika Hinduja through a social networking site, says that working with the legends was a “surreal” experience. “I feel so humble and thrilled about it and have immense gratitude for this opportunity.”

At a recent dinner, Shraddha was floored when Sir Kingsley kissed her hand. “Ambika had organised a dinner in London and he asked me to sing. I sang one of Lataji’s songs for him and I was overwhelmed by his appreciation, when he just took my hand and kissed it.”

She says that while a filmy background has its advantages, it comes with its share of downsides. “I’ve always wanted to be an actor, but I believe that there are no short cuts. I am sure people have expectations from me because of my father and maasi (aunt Padmini Kolhapure), but I’m willing to give it my all.” Next up, the actress will be seen walking the ramp for the Chennai Fashion Week in December.

Director Leena Yadav’s ambitious venture featuring the two stalwarts of Hindi and Hollywood cinema - Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley - Teen Patti is set to release in mid-February 2010. Produced by Ambika Hinduja, the film explores changing human emotions through a series of poker games and kickstarts with a conversation between two mathematic experts at a casino in London. While Kingsley plays Persi Trachtenberg, regarded as the world’s greatest mathematician alive, Bachchan essays the role of Venkat, a reclusive maths genius. Over a casual conversation at the casino with Trachtenberg, Venkat ends up sharing a mathematical equation that could re-define the principles of probability and randomness. Since the two play scholars and professors respectively, scenes have also been shot at the Cambridge University along with R. Madhavan, who plays Shantanu, Venkat’s co-professor.

What follows next is a series of gambling encounters in Mumbai after Shantanu persuades Venkat to try his equation at a game of poker and they find success along with group of college students. The series of encounters have been shot across gambling parlours set-up on streets as well on studios in Mumbai. As the film progresses and the gamblers’ prowess with the equation grows, greed takes over in what initially started off as an experiment of knowledge. It is Trachtenberg who then rescues these knowledge-seekers- turned-gamblers in the climax act. Sharing the spotlight with Bachchan, Kingsley and Madhavan are Siddharth Kher and Raima Sen alongwith newcomers Shraddha Kapoor, Saira Mohan, Dhruv Ganesh and Vaibhav Talwar.

A Day With Shraddha Kapoor

Wagah Border is located at a distance of 28 kilometers from Amritsar. It is the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. It is an army outpost to protect check intrusion from Pakistan and prevents any Indian from going to Pakistan. Special buses and taxes from Amritsar take the tourists to Wagah Border. En route Wagah the tourists chance upon seeing some of the most fertile lands of Amritsar.

At the border outpost there is a complex of buildings, roads and barriers on both sides. At the entrance of this outpost, there is a sightseeing gate with an inscription "Swarna Jayanti". From this a panoramic view of the landscape is seen. There are electrified fences with 66,000 volts of electric current.

The Beautiful Golden Temple

People visit Wagah border to see "Beating the Retreat" ceremony performed by the soldiers in evening. Soldiers from India and Pakistan perform a flag march. The flags are both the countries are brought down. Then the gates between India and Pakistan are opened. Soldiers perform some drills and then the complex is illuminated. The whole ceremony takes about half an hour.

Though it has not been confirmed, but Teen Patti will be released this year. After one half year filming in India and England, this film is already completed. Produced by Ambika Hinduja under Serendipty banner, Teen Patti costs high budgets and casts multi-starers. Out of the five high-profile films Amitabh Bachchan is working on this year, Teen Patti, directed by Leena Yadav, is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated.

The film features a host of stars, Big B along with Oscar-winner Sir Ben Kingsley, and other popular actors such as Madhavan, Boman Irani, Siddharth Kher, Mahesh Manjrekar, Raima Sen, Dhruv Ganesh, Vaibhav Talwar and Shraddha Kapoor.

Amitabh Bachchan plays Venkat Subramaniam, an absent minded professor of mathematics who is on the verge of cracking a theory that could redefine the principles of probability and randomness.

A thriller about interplay of luck, fate and mathematical probability in gambling, Venkat trains five of his brightest protégées (Madhavan, Siddharth Kher and newcomers Dhruv Ganesh, Vaibhav Talwar and Shraddha Kapoor) for high stakes gambling.

At the same time, Sir Ben, who plays Perci Trachtenberg, one of the greatest living mathematicians in the world, understands that Venkat’s new theory could have far reaching implications on mathematics and science. It’s a theory that questions the idea of what is fate and what is random.

The film was rumoured earlier to be inspired from the Kevin Spacey starrer 21 and though the film does have some similar moments, Leena has changed the storyline by including Kingsley’s character in the movie.

Scripted by Shivkumar Subramaniam and Leena Yadav, the film is produced by Ambika Hinduja and marks the debut of actor Shakti Kapoor’s daughter, along with Dhruv Ganesh and Vaibhav Talwar.

Teen Patti in London

All crews and casts of Teen Patti went to London in the early of May 2009 to finish last scenes of this film. After long speculation, finally Oscar-award winning actor Ben Kingsley who propelled to fame for his depiction of Mahatma Gandhi in 1982 returned to his Indian roots to star in a Bollywood movie, Teen Patti, with megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Buzz said before it would be Pierce Brosnan or Richard Gere who will play a pivotal role along with Big B.

Sir Ben has two projects lined up in India with his own production company. One film will tell the love story behind the building of Taj Mahal, while another is about an American youngster in India.

"In the short time since making Teen Patti, I've also had offers to act in other Indian films," said Kingsley, whose next Hollywood film is Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese. "I'd love to return to India to film there," he said.

In the early 2009, all shoots of Teen Patti has been accomplished in Pune, India before going to abroad. During that time, Amitabh Bachchan has kept his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan immortal through his poems. He used post his favorite poems from his father’s collection on his blog. Apparently the cast and crew of Teen Patti were lucky enough to enjoy Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poetry through Amitabh Bachchan.

A unit hand told us a notable experience that happened on the last day of the shoot. “To make the last day of the film’s shoot special the entire cast and crew of Teen Patti requested Mr Babchchan to recite of his father’s poetry. After cajoling him, he finally agreed to recite for 20 minutes. However everyone gathered in a classroom when Big B started reciting his favorite poems which continued for almost two hours.” Says a unit hand.

Alongside Madhavan, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Raima Sen this movie also stared by John Barry, who has taught acting to Shah Rukh Khan and Manoj Bajpai, is all set to make his acting debut. The theatre teacher was there to conduct a workshop with Amitabh Bachchan and some college students, who are part of the cast for Teen Patti (Siddharth Kher, Vaibhav Talwar, Dhruv Ganesh, and Shraddha Kapoor). As expected, the students were in awe of Amitabh Bachchan.

If you were to Google Siddhanth Kapoor, you'd be dished out close to six pages of news on his arrest at the Bombay East 72 rave party in October 2008. With no good word on the guy in cyber space, it's ironic when friends and acquaintances tell you he's not your average messed-up celebrity kid. Those who've grown up with Siddhanth aka "Bully" find it tough to share gossip on him, the stuff you'd expect from the Pandora's Box of the rich and famous.

The "most chilled out guy" has the life of any other 25 year-old gyming, kickboxing, catching movies, and meeting his group of 12 friends over dinner. When he isn't doing any of this, he works on improving his Urdu diction. "Sonam (Kapoor) is a childhood friend, so is Boney Kapoor's son, Arjun. But, that's as far as celebrity friends go. The rest are just people I went to school and college with," he shrugs.

Allergic to page 3

While growing up, his parents kept him and younger sister Shraddha away from celebrity parties. And that perhaps has something to do with his allergy for "page 3-type" socialising. It's tough to find a photograph or news piece on him, anywhere, until the rave bust happened, that is. "I stay away from all that. I haven't given interviews either."

Slouching on a couch beside giant glass panes that overlook the sea, comfortable in worn out jeans and flip-flops, he nonchalantly says, "I don't care where people come from, who their parents are, what they wear. Nothing." He holds your gaze constantly with a novel glint in his eye, without blinking much and smiling, however sporadically, with utmost genuineness, some despair and comfort, all at once. A few features (especially the eyes) and the contours of his face bear an uncanny resemblance to his father's Bollywood's favourite bad guy. It's the sort of face, soft but craggy, that instantly speaks of having endured tough times.

"The rave bust was the hardest time in my life. It was disturbing to be singled out, to make it to the headlines, get misrepresented on TV channels and tabloids... all because I was a celebrity kid. He was just DJing at the party, a passion he's harboured for a decade. "But I happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time," he throws his hands up in the air exasperated. The media that had gone to town over the drug test, turned cold when the result was declared negative. "Nobody did a follow-up to that story," he rues.

I'll never stop DJing

Back in 1999, Siddhanth bagged his first gig at Head Quarters, better known as HQs, Colaba's favourite teen night spot. Since then, he has DJed at sundry clubs and parties. He is a proud collector of 5 Caselogics of music, and loves all forms of electronic. But, he plans to change his style a bit, and focus more on house. "But playing at parties is out of the question. I am going to stick to leading nightclubs, those that are safe to play at."

Direction helps an actor

In last two years, Siddhanth has been busy assisting South director Priyadarshan on Bhool Bhulaiya, Bhaagam Bhag and Dhol. "Direction equips you to understand the nuances of filmmaking, which are necessary for actors to know camera angles, dialogue and discipline on set." After studying acting at the Lee Strasberg Film and Theatre Institute, New York and direction at the New York Film Academy, Siddhant is scouting for quality auditions. At the moment, he is nervously waiting to hear from Anurag Kashyap Productions on a lead role he auditioned for last week. He's clear that he will be picky about roles, the kind of stuff Saif Ali Khan did in Omkara or Abhay Deol in DevD. But for now, he's elated that his 22 year-old sister is making her debut in Leena Yadav's Teen Patti starring Big B. "I am the typical possessive older brother. But we are very close,"
he smiles.

Mom's the word

The family is the closest they have ever been, he admits. "We have been through a lot. But, we have stuck on." He credits this calm, collected outlook to his mother, Shivangi's (Kolhapure) daily Mahikari Japanese spiritual regime. "It purifies the mind, body and soul. Mom, Shraddha and I practise it daily. I think that's what has kept us going, kept us together."

Shakti Kapoor’s daughter who wants to follow her father’s footsteps is set to be realized soon.

Discussing her debut, Shraddha says, “It’s a dream come true. It’s my first film, yet I am sharing screen space with living legend Amitabh Bachchan. I can’t talk about my role because I am under a contract not to give out details. I just want to say that the script is wonderful. I can hardly wait for the film to release. I’m so grateful to my brother Siddhanth. It is because of him that I got the chance to do Teen Patti.” Siddhanth and producer Ambika Hinduja studied together and that is how Shraddha ended up auditioning for the role.

Shraddha’s mother, Shivangi Kapoor, too is extremely excited for her daughter. She says, “As a child, Shraddha always wanted to become an actress and she would watch all of her aunt Padmini Kolhapure’s films. I’m so happy that her dream has finally come true. Before she entered the film industry, she graduated from Boston. She has always been a confident girl.”

Teen Patti will also showcase the debuts of newcomers Dhruv Ganesh and Vaibhav Talwar. In the film, Amitabh Bachchan plays a professor who teaches five of his brightest students how to gamble with high stakes- he is doing this for a cause.

Shakti Kapoor -The Family Man

Shakti Kapoor may play a bad man on screen but in real life he is a complete softie. His wife and children are his life and slowly but surely he has been actively helping the kids chart out their life ahead.

His daughter Shraddha will be making her Bollywood debut in Teen Patti which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Mahadavan, Mahesh Manjerekar and dad Shakti. “Now we share a great time at home. We discuss each other's scenes…Shraddha sits with me everyday for half an hour discussing how her movie is coming along. She has been shooting for the past two months but it was stopped because of illness of Bachchan Saab. It is great that she got a chance to work with him in her first movie,” says a proud daddy.

Shakti Kapoor’s son is also hoping to pursue his acting dreams. His son, Siddhanth, used to be a DJ but Shakti says he is now planning to take his acting seriously.

“My son will not become composer - he will become a hero only. He used to be a DJ. That is his hobby…he enjoys it and that is why he tried his hand in it. My daughter Shraddha is already ready with her launch. And soon my son Siddhanth will also be seen in a movie,” he says.

But Kapoor says while he may actively participate in his kids’ lives, he never forces them to take any decision.

"I never tell them which films to select. My daughter has studied in Boston. She is more mature than me and in fact sometimes I take her advice. We do not have that ego hassle in our home…it is all mutual and we treat each other as friends," he says.

And it looks like acting is the only focus in the Kapoor household. Alongwith the kids, Shakti Kapoor is equally busy with his films.

“I am doing 6 films - two of them are for Priyan (Priyadarshan) Malamaal Weekly sequel and another one, one with Satish Kaushik - Khalbali Hai Kalhbali. Then I am doing films with Sanjay Dutt, Bhatti on Chutti is there and Kis Se Pyar Karu with Arshad Warsi .This is best time to work as there are lots of options available for us,” he informs.

"Now we cannot work like earlier where we are working in 10 films at same time.
We can only do max 4 films as nowadays star gives 20 days for the film then producer take all crew somewhere out of the country ,so we cannot regularly come and go there. Like Akshay or Govinda has given these many dates then we have to finish shooting during that time."

Lastly he says that he likes playing stylized villains in the films but then he has been typecast for his comedy roles, he will also see as hero in Tara Sitara film.

This year is going to be the newcomers' year. After Neil Mukesh, Mimoh, Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor, now it's Shraddha Kapoor – Shakti Kapoor's daughter - who'll be getting into films.

Shraddha has been signed by Ambika Hinduja for her next film Teen Patti directed by Leena Yadav. The girl will share screen space with Amitabh Bachchan. Speaking about Shraddha, father Shakti Kapoor says, "Sharaddha is young and beautiful like her mother. She always wanted to be an actress and now eventually has signed her first movie. I am quite happy about her debut."

Shraddha has studied in Boston. Being inclined towards acting since childhood the going-to-be actress says, "I always wanted to be an actress. My brother Siddhanth and (producer) Ambika studied together. Ambika came to know about me from him and informed me about the movie. I auditioned for Teen Patti and got selected." Shraddha is very excited about sharing screen space with Amitabh Bachchan. She informs that she is extremely humbled, excited and obviously nervous about her first film and refuses to divulge any details about it. The shooting for the movie begin in early 2008.

Being the daughter of Shakti Kapoor and the niece of actor Padmini Kolhapure, Shraddha must have received a lot of advice on acting and films? "Yes, I am constantly learning from them by watching their films. They are amazing. I haven't done any acting course but I do get acting advice from them. However, choosing films as my career is completely my own decision."

Shakti Kapoor corroborates her statement with, "Her mother Shivangi is taking care of her. I will think about my son Sidhhanth's career. Shiddhant is young and like Shraddha he too is getting good offers is inclined towards acting. He has done an acting course from New York, and has been assisting Priyadarshan since the last five years. Now that he is getting good acting offers, he's busy grooming himself and looks forward to a proper launch."
